A Peppermint Mocha is a Caffè Mocha with peppermint syrup added. That’s the whole recipe difference. And that one extra ingredient pushes a Grande from 35 grams of sugar to 54.
Nineteen grams, from a flavor that tastes like candy cane and nothing else. A Grande comes in at 440 calories. That’s 70 more than a plain Caffè Mocha, and the 54 grams of sugar already runs past the 50-gram daily limit for added sugar. Nothing else has even been eaten yet.
It comes back with the holiday menu, usually in early November. Plenty of people then order one every week until New Year’s, and most never look at the label.

Peppermint Mocha Calories: Hot vs. Iced
Grande, 2% milk, whipped cream and topping included:
| Version | Calories | Sugar | Fat | Protein | Caffeine |
| Hot | 440 | 54g | 16g | 13g | 175mg |
| Iced | 420 | 49g | 17g | 9g | 175mg |
Iced runs 20 calories lighter and 5 grams lower in sugar, mostly because ice takes up room that milk would otherwise fill. The caffeine doesn’t change. It all comes from the espresso, and both versions use the same shots.
One note on the name. Starbucks doesn’t list a “Peppermint Mocha Latte” as a separate drink. People search for it that way, but the menu item is simply the Peppermint Mocha, and the numbers above are for it.
Where the 54 Grams of Sugar Come From
Three sources stack up here, and the milk is the smallest of them.
Mocha sauce goes in first. It’s thick and chocolatey, closer to hot fudge than a flavor shot, and it carries most of the sugar a regular Caffè Mocha has. Peppermint syrup goes in alongside it. A single pump of a Starbucks syrup runs around 20 calories and 5 grams of sugar, and the peppermint is what separates this drink from the plain mocha. Whipped cream and topping finish it off, adding their own calories and a bit more sugar.
Milk brings natural lactose too, but that’s a small piece next to the sauce and syrup. Starbucks doesn’t currently make a sugar-free mocha sauce, so the sauce side of this drink can’t be swapped out. You can only use less of it.
Peppermint Mocha vs. Caffè Mocha and Other Holiday Drinks
Here’s how a Grande compares to the drinks it usually sits next to on the menu:
| Drink (Grande) | Calories | Sugar |
| Caffè Mocha | 370 | 35g |
| Pumpkin Spice Latte | 390 | 50g |
| White Chocolate Mocha | 390 | ~52g |
| Peppermint Mocha | 440 | 54g |
Peppermint Mocha leads this group on both calories and sugar. Against the plain Caffè Mocha, it adds about 70 calories and 19 grams of sugar. Against the Pumpkin Spice Latte, it’s 50 calories heavier and a few grams higher in sugar. That’s no accident. It’s the one drink in the group that stacks mocha sauce and a flavored syrup together, and the numbers show it.
What Else Is on the Label
Sugar gets the attention, but a Grande also carries 16 grams of fat, and 10 of those are saturated, which is 50% of the daily value. Most of that comes from the whipped cream and the milk. Sodium is modest at 140mg. There are 13 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber, which is more of both than most flavored drinks in this series, thanks to the milk and the cocoa.
So it isn’t empty calories exactly. It just spends most of them on sugar and saturated fat, and the protein only partly makes up for it.
How Much Caffeine Is in a Peppermint Mocha?
A Grande has about 175mg, the same as a Grande Caffè Mocha. Peppermint syrup adds none, so the caffeine number comes entirely from the espresso (and a little from the cocoa in the sauce). That’s roughly 40% more than a Grande Pike Place’s 310mg isn’t, since brewed coffee runs higher, but it’s well above what a Refresher or tea gives you. Ask for blonde espresso, and each shot carries about 10mg more than the signature roast.
How to Order a Lighter Peppermint Mocha
Because the sauce and syrup are the problem, most of the savings come from using less of them.
Skip the whipped cream. That saves roughly 80 calories and 8 grams of fat on a Grande, and about 100 calories on a Venti. It’s the single easiest change.
Ask for fewer pumps. Requesting two pumps each of mocha sauce and peppermint syrup cuts roughly 100 calories and 25 grams of sugar, according to one calculator site’s numbers, and the drink still tastes like a Peppermint Mocha.
Change the milk. These are estimates, using the same milk-to-milk differences that hold for the Caffè Mocha:
| Milk (Grande, with whip) | Calories (estimated) |
| Almond | ~350 |
| Nonfat | ~380 |
| 2% (standard) | 440 |
| Oat | ~460 |
| Whole | ~480 |
Oat milk runs higher than 2%, which surprises people who assume plant-based means lighter. Almond is the lowest.
Stack the first two changes and a Grande lands somewhere around 260 calories and the high 20s in sugar. Add nonfat milk, and it’s close to 200. Those totals are estimates based on adding up the individual servings, so plug your exact order into a Starbucks drink calories calculator to see where yours actually lands, or use our Starbucks nutrition calculator to compare a few builds side by side.
FAQs
What does a Grande Peppermint Mocha add up to?
440 calories hot, with 54 grams of sugar, 16 grams of fat, and 175mg of caffeine. Iced comes in closer to 420 calories.
Does one drink really pass the daily sugar limit?
Most of that sugar is added, so a hot Grande lands past the 50-gram daily value. The iced version, around 49 grams, sits just under it.
Is a Peppermint Mocha Latte a different drink?
No. The menu lists one drink, the Peppermint Mocha. “Latte” is just how plenty of people search for it.
What does the peppermint change compared with a Caffè Mocha?
It adds peppermint syrup, and that’s worth about 70 calories and 19 grams of sugar in a Grande.
Can I order it sugar-free?
Not really. Starbucks doesn’t make a sugar-free mocha sauce. Fewer pumps and no whipped cream are your best options.
Where should I start if I only want to cut calories?
Skip the whipped cream. That’s about 80 calories gone from a Grande. Two pumps each of mocha and peppermint take off roughly 100 more.
